Quick Impression: Iron Sky

In 1945 the Nazis fled to the Moon. In 2018 they are coming back!

So I had a few spare hours and I was flicking through NetFlix looking for something to distract me and I saw this. I had heard people talking about the 'Moon Nazis' movie that was being made on and off for a while and there it finally was. So I settled down for I knew not what but hey a film about Moon Nazis can't be all that bad can it? What I got was exactly what was advertised.

It starts with the President of the USA (a blatent send up of Sarah Palin) attempting to boost her re-election campaign by sending some men to the moon. It hadn't been done in 50 years and one of the men she is sending is called James Washington, is black...and a male model. If that doesn't win votes what will! So you get the impression very quickly that this film has it's tongue firmly in it's cheek.

Washington is captured by Moon Nazis and who are rather shocked to see a black man but then again their views are quite outdated after 60+ years on the moon! He is given to Dr Richter who promptly makes him white with blue eyes and blonde hair (of cause) and plays Nazi properganda messages to him to get him thinking the way all good Nazis should.

Dr Richter

He is then enlisted by wannabe Fuhrer Klaus Adler to go to Earth with him and his Earthologist fiance Renate Richter. Why? Well to take over the world of cause.

Now you get an idea of what this film is about the question is was it worth watching? While the special effects were not great they were surprisingly good as was the acting. The main reason both worked was that the film knew what it was and didn't try to be anything more. It was a film about Moon Nazis!

It had a charm that you used to get with classic B-Movies before Micheal Bay came along with all his millions of dollars and changed what people expect from special effects. However a space battle with 'Space Zeppelins' in particular was great if you were to compare it to say a 90's film. Those were the films I grew up with so maybe I enjoy the look of this film due to nostalgia for that time in my movie watching life. I found the humour reminded me of the Naked Gun movies, being very self aware and I think that if you go into it with that in mind you can't help but enjoy it.

It didn't outstay it's welcome at 1h30mins and I'd say if you ever find yourself with an hour and a half to spare then give it a watch. It won't win any awards or make it on to many peoples favourite film list but then I really doubt that the director or anyone involved thought it would. I imagine that they had a lot of fun making this film and I had fun watching it.

So my new favourite film? No but it is definitely the best film I've ever seen about Nazis living on the moon!
